  Chapter 1

  Angel

“Nuh-uh, Mom B, that be Peaches and the other girls,” I said, referring to my four best friends Peaches, Missy, Ebony, and Kim. “I be good. I don’t date or nothing.” I laughed as I looked around at them and responded to Blaze’s mom. There was no point in trying to keep a straight face, the cut of Mom B’s eyes told me that she didn’t believe me.

“Bullshit, Angel,” she came back at me, “I’ve known yo ass long enough to see right through you. But that does make me wonder, though. Why don’t you date? You’re the only one out of these four heffas that hasn’t come to me asking for dating advice. And yes, I’m adding Missy hot coochie ass. She be on my damn line every other day, shit—”

“Momma! For real!” Missy shouted at Bianca, making us laugh.

“Girl, sit yo ass down. I’m just sayin’,” Bianca waved Missy off before she pointed to Peaches. “Every day this one here is on my phone talking about Blaze. It has gotten so damn bad that I got her on don’t disturb mode from six in the morning until four in the evening. Her and that damn Blaze works my ass knowing damn well nann one of them gonna leave the other,” she rolled her eyes and shook her head. Even though Blaze was her son, she held no punches when it came to him just as she held no punches when it came to us.

“I don’t even call you like that no more—” Peaches rolled her eyes at Bianca.

“Yeah, because I blocked yo ass,” Mom B countered, making us all laugh.

Because of the fondness we all had for Bianca, we started referring to her as either Momma or Mom B. She treated the five of us like her daughters, telling us right from wrong without sugarcoating it. And even though she cussed us out, she always kept it real with us and we knew we could depend on her. She was our momma in every sense of the word other than blood.

“Whatever, Momma,” Peaches began. “When I call it be serious. I just be wanting to check up on Blaze to make sure he’s good. Man, it’s hard being all the way in Lafayette and he’s here. I don’t want him to know that I be worrying about him, especially given everything that happened at the house. So I have to call you and make sure he’s not getting into trouble.” Peaches let out a heavy sigh as she laid her head on Kim’s shoulder.

I could tell just from the look on her face that she was stressing behind the move. I felt bad for my girl with everything she had been through while dating Blaze. I didn’t understand why someone would continue to deal with drama and keep putting their life on the line for a man. I wanted to understand the type of love she had for him, but when I saw everything she endured because of that love, a part of me didn’t want to know or ever want to have to deal with that.

My hand went to her hair and slowly I began to run my fingers through it. “Babe, don’t stress it,” I tried to comfort her. “You know we got our ears to the ground and our eyes on him. So if anything happens you’ll be the first to know about it.”

That worrying was one of the main reasons I would never date a hood. Hell, I didn’t date so it didn’t really matter one way or the other.

“I know that,” she sighed, “but still, it’s hard with the distance. We get through it, though.” The stressed look on her face just made me even more determined to never date a hood. “And while momma over there tryna blast somebody, I only called and complained about Blaze ass one time with her dramatic ass,” she said as we all laughed.

“Remember I told y’all he was supposed to come down to Lafayette and spend the weekend with us” Peaches continued, “but he didn’t come because King had a party or whatnot? Y’all know how these hoes be out here. All I’m saying is, Blaze wouldn’t sleep with one of them, but he would probably get some head no doubt. Especially since I hadn’t given him no blow. So I snapped on his ass about it and then called Momma, told her I was gon’ leave him if I found out somebody sucked him off,” Peaches rolled her eyes at Bianca.

I looked at her and laughed. “And like Momma said, nann one of you gonna leave the other. If he got sucked off by somebody else that’s yo fault. You should’ve gave that nigga some head.”

“Same shit I said. What you won’t do another hoe will. Boon,” Bianca said, calling Blaze by the nickname she had given him, “was triflin’, but he’s not no more, so you don’t have to worry about him. Peaches, you know that man like nobody else. You know when his ass be lying or hiding some shit—”

In the middle of Bianca speaking truth to Peaches, Ebony suddenly jumped up and ran out of the living room with her hand over her mouth. Worried, I started to go after her, but Peaches pulled me back down.

“I got it,” she said as she stood up and went after Ebony.

“She’s okay,” Bianca said before looking back at me. “As I was saying, all these heffas come to me with their men and women problems except for you. I’mma tell you, Angel, I want grandbabies and a lot of them. Peaches and Blaze are frozen right now due to their issues, but the rest of you heffas better start popping them babies out. And y’all don’t even have to slow down your careers. Hell, I can babysit,” she clapped her hands together excitedly.

Missy, Kim, and I looked at each other and broke out laughing. “Yeah, you gon’ be waiting a long time for me. I can’t have no kids, I’d rather be the cool auntie,” I said as I rejected the idea of having kids. Children were something I never saw in my future and I wasn’t about to start thinking to have any now.

“I’m starting to think you don’t like men, Angel. I swear I have never heard you talk about a dude you like. If you like women that’s cool, too. I wouldn’t love you any less. Hell, look at Missy ass. I love her to death and she goes into detail about the women she mess with. Lord, have mercy on my ears when she calls,” Bianca’s head shook.

  Again we broke out laughing.

“Um, she’s right here,” Missy pointed to herself. “Momma, you wrong. I bet I don’t call yo ass no more. Watch, I’ll confide in my bitches from here on out,” Missy’s eyes rolled as she got up and moved away from Bianca.

Bianca’s hand shot out and she smacked Missy on the ass. “Please do. I
won’t be upset, I promise I won’t.”

Missy came over and flopped down next to me. I laughed at them, they were my family and they were all crazy as hell. “Momma, you wrong, Missy not that bad,” I said, hoping to make Missy feel better. “And I’m not gay, I just haven’t found that guy for me. I’m not rushing to find him either.” I wasn’t looking for a relationship. It consisted of too many things I wasn’t yet ready to give.

“I have to disagree, Ang,” Kimmy chimed in. “Missy’s conversations do be a bit out there. And her coochie hella friendly. She got a different female every day of the week,” she snapped her fingers as she sang.

“Wait, ain’t you hopping between two dicks, though?” Missy looked at Kimmy with disbelief on her face. “So how you judging, Kim?”

I broke out laughing. “Girl, you know Kim don’t see her own wrong, but can point out everybody else’s.” Kim had her nerve.

“Fuck both of y’all. Ugh, stupid asses,” Kim snapped as she stuck up her middle finger at us.

Missy, Bianca, and I laughed at her comeback just as Peaches and Ebony walked back into the room. The wide smile on Peaches’ face had my brows scrunching together. I nudged Missy and pointed to the pair.

“Oh, shit! Peach got that I’m about to scream look. What is it?” Missy asked them.

“I swear Peaches does. Look at her dimples, they done sunk in deep,” Kim laughed. “I’m excited now and I don’t even know why you looking like that.”

“What’s going on with y’all?” Bianca asked them.

“E, tell them,” Peaches nudged her, smiling harder.

I could literally already hear the squeak that wanted to escape Peaches’ mouth.

Ebony laughed and rolled her eyes. “I’m pregnant—”

“What!” Missy, Kim, and I yelled at the same time. “What? How?” Again, we asked.

This time Ebony and Peaches laughed at us. I was shocked and excited for her. “How far along are you? Oh, my God, E!” I stood up and hugged her.

“I’m three months. I’ve been wanting to tell y’all, but I didn’t want to jinx it. I’ve never gone over three or four months before I miscarry, so I kept it to myself. I’ll be four months in two days so I think I’m safe,” she laughed, smiling extra hard.

“I’mma be an auntie—” I stopped talking and glared at Kim as she began to say the same thing.

Laughing, Kim pushed me away from her. “Shut up, Angel.” She turned to Ebony and pulled her into a hug. “I’m so happy for you, babe.” She bent down to Ebony’s stomach. “What are you?” She asked it.

We all broke out laughing. “Move, girl. You a damn fool,” Ebony pushed Kim away from her.

“I’m so happy for you, Ebony. You giving me a grandbaby. Lord, I hope it’s a girl. I can’t deal with another Blake” she said, referring to her grandson. “He’s three and terrible,” Bianca laughed as she kissed Ebony on the cheek.

Peaches’ smile quickly faded at Bianca’s words. “Don’t do my baby, you going too far now. While you talking, he acts just like yo damn son. When Blaze and Blake are together I swear they’re the exact same,” she shook her head and I laughed.

Peaches was telling the truth. Blake’s little ass was something else, but I loved the hell out of him.

Bianca waved her off before she pulled Ebony down on the couch. “What did King say? Is he excited?”

Ebony’s smile faded and she started to chew on her bottom lip.

A sigh left my mouth and my head shook. Based on what she’d just done, I knew something serious was up. “Oh, shit! What happened, E?”

Ebony quickly composed herself and glared at us. “First off, who said this was King’s baby?”

The girls and I all looked at each other quietly and then broke out laughing, Bianca included.

“Bitch, please. Yo ass ain’t getting no dick from nobody but King’s ass. So stop it,” Kim spoke the truth. “What happened, you was drunk and slipped on his dick?” She asked, cheesing hard as ever.

“I swear, right,” I added my two cents. “E ass slip on King’s dick every other week then get mad at us.” I broke out laughing as Ebony threw a pillow at me. “I’m sorry, boo. But seriously, what King say when he found out?”

Ebony let out a huge sigh and shrugged. She looked at us. “I haven’t told him yet.”

Bianca opened her mouth to say something, but then she shut up as her brows furrowed.

“Why haven’t you? He should’ve been the first one to know,” Missy stared at Ebony, confused.

“Because I have lost every baby because of him. Like, where I am in my pregnancy right now, King always does something that stresses me and I lose the baby. But not this time. Where I am in my life at this moment, I’m happy. Even though we’re not together, that doesn’t change anything because I’m happy,” Ebony laughed as her smile returned to her face. “Y’all, I can actually have sex with King and then get up and leave with no problem. I don’t have to cling to him no more and I feel so good about that. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ha’Keem,” she used King’s real name, something she rarely did, “but I haven’t been this happy with myself in a long time.”

Ebony sighed deeply before continuing, “Now if I tell King about the baby, he’s going to try to push himself back into my life more. He’s not going to leave me alone and he’s going to stress me out like he’s done each time I was pregnant before. So I’m going to wait until I’m close to my due date and then tell him,” she shrugged nonchalantly, as if that was a smart idea.

I didn’t see how she was going to avoid King’s ass for six months or how she was going to keep him from finding out. Ebony may have said that she was no longer with King, but her ass couldn’t stay off that man’s dick. I was very curious to see how that was going to work and from the silence of the other girls and the looks on their faces, they were just as curious as I was.

“Girl, you sound dumb as hell,” Bianca told Ebony and we all burst out laughing. If anyone was going to say something, it was most definitely going to be Mom B’s ass.

“What?” Ebony looked at her, confused. “How do I sound dumb? That seems pretty smart to me. I haven’t been stressed since I left King—”

Bianca cut her off. “Baby, I agree with you. You’re very happy now that you’re finding yourself. But, Ebony, you can’t hide the fact that you’re pregnant from that man. For one, you two are always having sex. Do you not think he’s going to notice the changes to your body when you’re naked? You’re thinking about it now and planning on hiding this for six months, but that’s not going to happen. But hey, you’re smart, do what you feel.”

Bianca smiled for a moment before saying, “As long as I have a healthy grandbaby, I’m fine with your decision. Oh, God, just imagine if you have a boy, that’s like two Blake’s. Lord let us pray she have a girl,” Bianca bowed her head and held her hands out. “Father God, I come to you today asking that you please bless us with a beautiful, healthy, baby girl that’s nothing like her father, oh, God,” Bianca prayed.

“You ain’t right, Momma, I swear you’re not,” Ebony told her as she laughed.

Suddenly, the garage door opened and Blake ran into the living room. “Mommy Peaches, Mommy Peaches!” He yelled as he ran to Peaches. Blake jumped into her lap and then tucked himself into her side.

“Blake, bring yo little ass here,” Blaze said as he barged in behind Blake, looking pissed.

“Hold on, Blaze, calm down! What happened?” Peaches looked from Blake to Blaze as she cradled the child at her side.

“Don’t worry about it, I’m about to beat his ass,” Blaze said as he made a grab for Blake.

Blake let out a loud scream, “Mommy Peaches!”

“Blaze, would you stop, damn! You see he’s scared. Just tell me what happened, please,” she pushed Blaze back, away from them.

I placed my elbows on my knees and put my face in my palms, watching them. These were the kind of times that I lived for with my family. They were nuts and I en
joyed watching their craziness play out.

“Scared, my ass. He wasn’t scared when he threw that damn ball at the back of my head,” he snapped. “Peaches, get the fuck out the way.”

“No. Wait, Blaze.” Peaches turned to Blake. “You threw a ball at him?”

“Yeah!” Blake stood up on the couch with wide eyes as he pointed to Blaze. “He, he, he threw the bottle at me and pushed me down,” Blake started to sniffle before he started crying. “He hurt me arm,” he cried as he showed Peaches his arm. “It hurts.”

I bit into my lip at his fake tears, his lil butt was a wonderful actor.

Peaches turned to Blaze. “You hurt his arm?” She was fuming mad. When Peaches turned her back to Blake so that she could face Blaze, Blake stuck out his tongue at Blaze.

“Father God, I come to you and pray that we don’t get another him, Lord!” Bianca started to pray again.

I fell back on the couch laughing my ass off at them.

Yeah, I didn’t see kids in my future any time soon.

  Chapter 2

  Angel

I felt my head fall back hard before someone touched my arm, waking me. I closed my parted lips before I covered my mouth to let out a yawn. Mentally, I shook myself, trying to wake up fully. The numerous students that had begun to stand from their seats caused me to groan out loud. I couldn’t believe I’d slept through the entire hour and a half of class.

“You okay?” Farrah, a girl in my class asked.

I let out another yawn before I started putting my stuff away. “Yeah, I’m good.” I was beyond tired. Having to work two different jobs on the same day on top of going to school was simply tiresome. “What I miss?”

Farrah laughed and shook her head. “Literally everything.”

Again, I let out a groan knowing she was right.

“Don’t worry, I’ll email you what we have to do as always. I should really start charging you for this,” she laughed as she waited for me to get the rest of my things together.
